The ALDI SOUTH Group joins international Food Waste Coalition
In June 2023, ALDI joined the Consumer Goods Forum’s Coalition for Action on Food Waste which brings together manufacturers and retailers from around the world to collectively tackle the problem of food loss and waste. Food waste is a critical global challenge which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and hunger. The coalition uses years of experience to address a problem that can only be solved through collective action.

In June 2020, The Consumer Goods Forum, a global organisation with over 400 members from across manufacturing and retail, launched the Coalition of Action on Food Waste. The coalition was created to address the global and complex crisis of food waste and loss.

Every year 1.3 billion tons of food, worth approximately US$1.3 trillion, goes uneaten; this is approximately one-third of all food produced globally. Food waste drives economic loss, global hunger and increases greenhouse gas emissions, while increasing the depletion of critical resources like water and energy.

Responsible Production and Consumption is the 12th Goal of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and one of its targets is to cut global food waste (per capita) in half at the retail and consumer level, and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses, by 2030. The Consumer Goods Forum’s Coalition of Action on Food Waste commits to contributing to this target and aims to increase the transparency around food waste at national, regional, and global levels and to develop innovations that reduce this waste.

The activities for ALDI and other coalition members include measuring food waste within operations, partnering with suppliers and collaborating with coalition companies to reduce food waste within operations, alongside developing ways to help our customers to reduce food waste.
