ALDI SÜD Germany accepted the award at a ceremony in Berlin on the 6th of June. It was presented under the patronage of Brigitte Zypries, former Federal Minister of Economics, by the German Institute for Service Quality in cooperation with the news channel ntv and DUP Unternehmer magazine. The Sustainability Award focuses on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations in the areas of social, economic and environmental affairs (SDGs).
Through our efforts, we were able to reduce climate-damaging emissions along our supply chains by shortening transport routes and creating value at source. Our AFRIKA cashews take a direct route from West Africa to Europe, eliminating the need for an intermediate stop for processing in Asia.
Our efforts not only reduced around 20 tonnes of CO2 per year, they also ensured the creation of local jobs under better living and working conditions. The nuts are dried, steamed, roasted and peeled locally, improving the livelihoods of people in the region.
Further to the award-winning AFRIKA cashews being sold in Germany, the overarching project resulted in three pioneering cashew products that are available in eight different ALDI markets.
